CABLED HAT CLASS

Want to jump into hat making? Been craving learning cables? Confused or just downright afraid of charts? This class will will help all of those. This is a two session class in which you'll knit up the "Crown-Shy" cabled hat by Ysolde Teague. This hat is a gorgeous but deceptively simple cabled pattern which will have you autumn-ready in no time. It also makes a beautiful gift if you're starting your holiday knitting. You may purchase the class here or in the shop. There is a cap of 8 participants to ensure a quality learning environment for everyone

Class sessions:

Wednesday 9/23 11am-1pm

Wednesday 9/30 11am-1pm

Prerequisites:

Must be able to cast-on, bind-off, knit and purl comfortably

Should be able to complete ribbed brim prior to first day of class

Options: This hat pattern has two options for cast-on, one which uses a provisional cast-on. If you're taking the class and don't know how to do a provisional cast-on but would like help doing so, you're welcome to bring your project into the shop prior to the class beginning for assistance

Yarn: Yarn for the project should be purchased through the shop: Any of our DK weight yarns would work for this project but Maddy recommends Brown Sheep Co. Prairie Spun DK, which we can custom order if given at least a 10 day lead time. The last day for custom orders of Brown Sheep Co. Prairie Spun DK is Saturday, September 12. Our ability to custom order other yarns varies greatly, please stop by the shop for options and lead times if needed. The example hat in the photo was knit from Baah Yarns Sonoma Yarn in our store exclusive color Quintessential Purple

Needles: Hat uses size 6 (4mm) needles, which you may bring from home. We also recommend having a cable needle (style of choice) but we do have those to purchase from the shop if needed

Pattern: The pattern may be purchased through the the shop or through Ravelry, as preferred but should be purchased ahead of the class so that you may begin on the ribbed brim

COMMUNITY YARN SWAP

We'll be hosting another Community Yarn Swap! This has been heavily requested since we did our last one, which was hugely successful. So successful that both Sno-Valley Community Center and the African miwives we donated to are fully stocked up! Right now, we're in contact with some senior centers in Spokane seeing if their community could use yarn donations, given the events of the past summer. If that doesn't work out, we have a number of teachers on the eastside that run knitting/crochet clubs that we'll be donating the yarn to. If you have any connections to Spokane community centers or places that may take yarn donations, please reach out to us at info@quintessentialknits.com and let us know so we can connect with them There are some rules around the yarn swap, which everyone was amazing about following last time and it made the yarn swap so much easier and enjoyable for everyone:

  • Yarn must be full balls/skeins/hanks (no scraps this time, sorry)

  • Yarn must have a tag that describes fiber content (for allergy purposes) but any fiber is welcome, including hand-spun as long as it has a tag and is "complete"

  • Yarn must be clean (no stains) and not have any exceptionally strong scents (smoke, perfume, air freshener, etc. also for allergy purposes. The natural, wool-y scent of lanolin is fine)

We'll make a post with FAQ's closer to the event to ensure everyone is on the same page but it will be pretty much the same as last time as we accept all kinds of fiber (including acyrlic and polyester) as well as notions, yarn bags, needles, hooks, etc. The swap will be happening at the shop on Saturday September 26th from 10am-3pm. Note that we do have limited space so we may have yarn under as well as on tables and it may get a little crowded. If you'd prefer to avoid a crowd, we recommend either coming early (before 11:30am) or late (between 2-3pm). If you have questions, please reach out to info@quintessentialknits.com or stop by the shop

COLORWORK SWEATER KNIT-A-LONG

In October, we will be doing a colorwork sweater knit-a-long. It will be the first four Saturdays of October (10/3 to 10/24) from 10:30-12:30. There will be two pattern options to work on: the Wixom Sweater by Jill Zielinski or the Bergman Sweater by Caitlin Hunter. There will be staff working on both patterns so there will be support for both. Both patterns may be purchased through the shop or Ravelry, as preferred. We request that you purchase yarn through the shop. Both sweaters are worsted weight and require two colors. Our recommended yarns are Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 or Studio Donegal Soft Donegal. There will be a cap of 12 participants due to space. The participation fee is $20 and may be paid online or in the shop until we hit the cap. If you have questions, please stop by the shop or reach out to info@quintessentialknits.com
