Thinking About Mom

Mother’s Day Thoughts

Mother’s Day is May 9th this year. We know the Moms in our lives (be they young, old, related or not) are the happiest when they are remembered and acknowledged. It doesn't have to be much - a card, a phone call or a beautiful letter detailing the things we love about her and some of our fondest memories spent together.

A present won’t tell her any better how much she is loved, but some of us are just gift givers and we love to do for our moms. If your mom is a weaver, knitter, crocheter, or spinner, and you are wanting to give a gift, we've compiled some ideas for you.

Think outside the box – or maybe about the box. We carry Hannah’s Wood Creation Notion Boxes. These multipurpose boxes are beautiful and handy sitting next to the designated knitting spot in Mom’s home. They are yarn bowl, notion holder, small ruler, and needle gauge all in one.

For weavers and spinners, consider a beautifully handcrafted drop or supported spindle, or a hand-carved shuttle stick, or crochet hook. We feature Allen Berry’s incredible work in our shop and there is nothing like using a beautiful piece of artwork as you relax and enjoy your craft.

Other notions we stock that might be enjoyed by Mom: Cocoknits Maker’s Keep – a slap wristband that is magnetic, used for pins, markers, needles - stocked in pink and grey, Maker’s Soap and/or pure Lanolin, Cocoknits Stitch markers (one of our fav notions), a wrist ruler, or a Cocoknits row counter.

We also offer gift cards, so if you think Mom just wants a chance to peruse a yarn shop and feel all the yarn - a gift card might be your best option.

Whichever way you slice it, the Mom in your life just wants to know she is loved and appreciated. To all the mother's we interact with on a daily basis, we hope you have a memorable Mother's Day. If it includes some yarn-time, all the better.

Quarterly KAL

We are enamored with so many things that are new on the fiber scene and some good ones that keep taking a backseat but still pull at us to be knit. As we try to decide which knits are deserving of our time and need to be knitted, several keep popping up on our radar. We talk about how they would fit in to our wardrobe, how wide their appeal and sizing, the seasonal timing, and of course, which yarn to use.

Pairing yarn with patterns can be a challenge and it is a beautiful thing when we fall in love with a pattern and realize we also carry the yarn.

Starting in June we will be knitting Blueprint together. We hope you will join us if the pattern appeals to you. We think it will be a great easy spring/summer piece and will work well for layering when we move in to Autumn. With 10-12" of positive ease, it looks breezy and loose and easy to pair with almost anything in your wardrobe: shorts, sundress, jeans, skirts.

This simple pattern is made from Nua Sport and comes in 18 colors. The yarn is a blend of merino wool, yak and linen so it is both soft and drapey. The pattern shows elbow-length sleeves and a short body, but the top down construction makes the length of both sleeves and body easy to adjust. Try it on as you go and customize it to your body type. The shorter length would be great with sundresses and shorts, but would be just as cute longer. It has a wider neckline which many people like. If this element is not a favorite, the neck ribbing - which is knitted last - can be extended to close up the neckline a bit (which is totally what I plan on doing!)

We carry eight beautiful colors in the shop. Check out the other colors here. If you like one we don't carry, we can order it and have it in the shop in about a week and a half.

We'd love for you to join us. Grab your yarn now and get your skeins and swatch ready. You'll have this cute sweater done in no time and be wearing it before the summer is gone.

Info to Know

We are still welcoming people in person and requiring masks be worn while in the shop (if you forgot yours, we can easily provide you with one, no worries). Once your hands are sanitized, you are welcome to touch and pet the yarn all you want. Sanitizer provided in store. For those who struggle wearing masks at this time, we are happy to help you shop virtually and provide curbside service.

We have had lots of people ask about classes. For the time being, we are not offering any classes. Announcements will go out when that changes. We miss our classes as well and hope we can offer them again soon. We are in the process of discussing ways to offer classes while keeping both our customers and teachers safe. Thanks for checking in.

We have also had a lot of people ask about how we are doing. We are so thankful for all our customers who are concerned and interested. We did have to close one half of our store at the end of last year due to Covid, sadly. We are back in our original space and have miraculously packed in tons of beautiful yarns, spinning wheels, fibers and a treasure trove of Clearance items all at 50% off. Come see us. We plan on sticking around!! :)
